Christopher Tanner (born 1955) is a multi-disciplinary artist from California who has been a creator in New York City for the past 45 years. Steeped in the culture of Lower East Side queer arts, his work reflects his vibrant life experience and recounts the incessant beauty that surrounds him. Tanner’s work incorporates diverse materials, including ancient redwood driftwood, ornate second-hand brooches, earth-derived minerals, and healing precious stones, to create captivating, ever-shifting installations. Tanner's works attempt to encapsulate the histories of the objects from which they are composed, forming a non-linear, celebratory timeline that links them in shimmering harmony and culminates in a collection of explosive and flamboyant shrines. Tanner explores the tension between life and death, inviting the viewer to interact with reflections that animate the forms, confronting mortality while subverting convention.
